Bathroom Suites Jargon Buster
  • 4 Piece: The standard bathroom suite package containing 4 pieces of ceramic ware - a pan, cistern, basin and pedestal.
  • 5 Piece: A bathroom suite package containing 5 pieces of ceramic ware - a pan, cistern, basin, pedestal and bidet.
  • Back To Wall (BTW): Used to describe an item of ceramic ware, most commonly a toilet, that fits tightly against the surface of the wall or furniture unit directly behind it.
  • Cistern: The ceramic or plastic vessel that stores the water necessary for flushing a toilet.
  • Cistern Fittings: The internal components of the cistern that facilitate the flushing mechanism of a toilet.
  • Cloakroom: A space saving bathroom suite usually including a WC and sink unit, but without a bath or shower enclosure.
  • Close Coupled: A contemporary style two-piece toilet consisting of a cistern that attaches directly to the pan with bolts and a gasket. Originally used to distinguish modern toilets from traditional styles wherein a wall-mounted cistern connects to the pan via a high or low level flush pipe.
  • Concealed Cistern: Wherein the chamber containing water necessary for flushing a toilet is hidden from view behind a wall or furniture unit.
  • Corner Fitting: Used to describe ceramic ware that has been designed specifically to fit in a given corner space.Particularly popular in en-suite bathrooms or in bathrooms where space is limited or unusually allocated.
  • Countertop: Used to describe a basin that requires support from a horizontal surface, such as a vanity unit or wash stand
  • Dual Flush: A cistern offering the user 2 levels of flush capacity - a water saving 4 litre flush or full volume 6 litre flush.
  • En-Suite: A secondary bathroom positioned directly adjacent to a bedroom and accessible by a door within the associated bedroom. En-Suite style ceramic ware is commonly designed to use space effectively as the room is often smaller than the primary bathroom.
  • Frames: A load bearing metallic system that fits inside a wall or furniture space to support wall hung ceramic ware.
  • Full Pedestal: The name given to the ceramic stand that accommodates a basin by standing upright on the bathroom floor.
  • High Level: Wherein a cistern mounted high on the wall connects to the pan via a long flush-pipe. A traditional style fixture operated by a pull-chain and handle.
  • Low Level: Wherein a cistern mounted on the wall connects to the pan by via a short flush-pipe.
  • Pan: Also commonly known as the toilet bowl. Quite bluntly the receptor of human waste!
  • Push-Button Flush: The button used to operate a toilets flush mechanism. A modern feature that has replaced the traditional handle flushing system.
  • Semi Pedestal: The name given to the ceramic attachment fixed directly to a wall to accommodate a basin. Does not extend all the way to the floor like a full pedestal and should ideally be supported by a frame inside the wall on which mounted.
  • Semi Recessed: Used to describe a ceramic basin that overhangs the edge of the vanity unit or wash stand on which it is housed.
  • Side Flush: Wherein the flushing mechanism of a toilet is controlled by a handle situated at the front side of a cistern.
  • Top Flush: Wherein the flushing mechanism of a toilet is controlled by a push button situated at the top of a cistern.
  • Towel Ring/Rail: A metallic attachment positioned at the top of a pedestal, just below the basin, that is used to accommodate hand towels.
  • Wall Hung: The name given to items of ceramic ware that are fitted to the wall as a sole means of support (no pedestal or stand). Frames should be inserted in to the wall directly behind the ceramic ware to ensure maximum stability. Allows for flexibility in the height at which the pan is set, and as they do not reach the floor, accessibility for cleaning underneath.
  • W.C.: An acronym of ‘water closet’, more commonly known as a toilet.
