Showers Jargon Buster
Adjustable Riser:
A handset housed by a shower rail that is height adjustable in order to suit the requirements of various users.
Balanced Supply:
Used to describe a hot and cold water supply of equal pressure, as is the case of gravity or mains fed supplies.
BEAB (British Electrotechnical Approvals Board):
A product approval process whereby electrical fittings are checked for quality and safety.
Body Jet:
A wall mounted fixture that shoots invigorating shower jets towards the user’s torso. Body jets can generally be positioned to target streams according to the user's preference.
Ceramic Disc Cartridge:
A shower component that allows single lever operation. Growing increasingly popular as a result of the minimal maintenance required and easy usability.
Ceramic Disc Valve:
A modern variety of valve that uses durable ceramic discs to create an impermeable watertight seal. Increasingly popular as a result of the associated benefits such as minimal maintenance and easily operable ¼ or ½ turn action.
Check Valve:
Check valves (also known as Non Return Valves) are necessary to comply with the Water bylaws on some fittings. These valves limit the flow of water to just one direction. Local water authorities should be contacted for further information.
Electric Shower:
Electric showers operate from a mains cold water supply only and as such do not require hot water to be stored. Generally speaking, the higher the voltage rating, the better the shower will perform.
Fixed Shower Head:
An outlet that is fitted rigidly to the shower wall for use in conjunction with recessed shower valves. The water supply is consequently provided using concealed piping.
Handset:
A handheld showering console that is generally housed on a fixed or rising rail kit. Some handsets offer settings that allow the user to control the flow of shower water.
Maximum Pressure:
A measurement of the largest pressure level needed to ensure fittings operate safely. If this level is exceeded, fittings are liable to damage.
Mechanical Valve:
A traditional valve that uses a rubber washer to create a watertight seal.
Minimum Pressure:
A measurement of the mandatory pressure level needed to ensure fittings perform satisfactorily. This measurement is dependant on both the tap and installed plumbing system. Low pressure plumbing systems are generally below 1 bar (a distance of 1 vertical metre between the showering outlet and the base of the water tank equals about 0.1 bar) and gravity fed, while high pressure plumbing systems are either pumped, combination boilers, or mains fed.
Manual Mixer Shower:
A shower valve with a single handle to control both flow and temperature. As this variety of shower valve doesn’t react to changes in the water supply’s pressure or temperature, it is necessary to control it manually.
Mixer Shower:
Mixer showers use both hot and cold water supplies to produce the showering temperature, whilst also offering enhanced flow rates in comparison to electric showers. Mixer showers can work on any system as long as water pressure is both balanced and within a suitable range.
Power Shower:
Power showers use both hot and cold water supplies pumped from gravity fed systems to give high flow rates. They cannot be used with combination or unvented mains systems.
Pressure Balancing Mixer:
Uses a pressure sensitive cartridge to provide a constant showering temperature even when supply pressure fluctuations occur. Pressure balancing mixers also utilise a safety shut off system that is triggered by the failure of either supply.
Pressure Reducing Valves:
Frequently required on systems that use mixers and where a high pressure imbalance (greater than a ratio of 5:1 generally) is present.
Recessed Shower Valve:
Recessed shower valves are installed within the shower wall, therefore ensuring all but the operating handles and concealing plate are hidden from view.
Rigid Riser:
A showering system wherein exposed pipework joins a surface mounted shower valve to a shower head fixed tightly to the wall.
Sequential Shower Mixer:
Unlike thermostatic shower mixers, sequential shower mixers operate using a single control that turns the system on and alters the temperature. As a result, the shower flow cannot be specified from the valve itself.
Shower Flex:
The flexible metallic cord that connects bath shower mixer valves to the handset.
Shower Pump:
Used to boost the water pressure, thus creating the capacity for a power shower to operate in gravity fed installations. Shower pumps are also commonly referred to as water pumps and are available in a variety of pressures to suit.
Surface Mounted Shower Valve:
Fitted directly to the exterior of the shower wall, thus making the valve and operating handles visible. The water supply pipes can be exposed or concealed according to preference.
Thermostatic Shower Mixer:
A shower valve with a temperature sensitive cartridge to supply a constant showering temperature. These mixers are commonly controlled by two handles - one for temperature, one for flow - and feature a safety shut-off system that is triggered by fluctuations in the temperature or pressure of the water supply.
Wall Mounted Fixings:
The components that ensure installation of wall fitted showers and bath mixers is possible, available in both exposed and concealed versions.
Water Pump:
Used to boost a system's water pressure, thus creating the capacity for a power shower to operate in gravity fed installations. water pumps are also commonly referred to as shower pumps and are available in a variety of pressures to suit.
