Taps Jargon Buster
  • Bath Shower Mixer: A fixture that is able to work both as a bath filler and a shower. The cold and hot water is mixed in the usual way, then distributed either through the tap or shower outlet at the user's discretion.
  • Bridge: A design feature wherein a raised horizontal connection is made between the cold and hot water tap chambers.
  • Ceramic Disc Cartridge: A tap component that allows a single lever operation. Growing increasingly popular as a result of the minimal maintenance required and easy usability.
  • Ceramic Disc Valve: A modern variety of valve that uses durable ceramic discs to create an impermeable watertight seal. Increasingly popular as a result of the associated benefits such as minimal maintenance and easily operable ¼ or ½ turn action.
  • Check Valve: Check valves (also known as Non Return Valves) are necessary to comply with the Water Bylaws on some fittings. These valves limit the flow of water to just one direction. Local water authorities should be contacted for further information.
  • Crosshead: A tap head design wherein four individual handles provide the required grip.
  • Cruciform: A design feature generally found in kitchen taps wherein the cold and hot handles are slightly raised and directly attached to the lower tap body.
  • Deck Mounted: A tap that requires installation upon a horizontal surface, such as a bath, basin or countertop.
  • Dual Flow: A tap feature that mixes both cold and hot water at the tap outlet, removing the need for check valves.
  • Freeflow Filler: A combined bath overflow, filler and pop-up waste. The cold and hot feeds are connected to the taps via a tee piece which in turn connects and diverts water to the filler. The pop-up waste and overflow operate in the normal way.
  • High Neck: A raised tap that allows more space under the outlet. Also known as a high rise tap.
  • Maximum Pressure: A measurement of the largest pressure level needed to ensure fittings operate safely. If this level is exceeded, fittings are liable to damage.
  • Mechanical Valve: A traditional valve that uses a rubber washer to create a watertight seal.
  • Minimum Pressure: A measurement of the mandatory pressure level needed to ensure fittings perform satisfactorily. This measurement is dependant on both the tap and installed plumbing system. Low pressure plumbing systems are generally below 1 bar (a distance of 1 vertical metre between the showering outlet and the base of the water tank equals about 0.1 bar) and gravity fed, while high pressure plumbing systems are either pumped, combination boilers, or mains fed.
  • Monobloc: A single mixer tap that is suitable for a one-hole bath or basin. Also commonly referred to as a "mono" mixer tap.
  • Non Concussive: A variety of taps that use self-closing valves to prevent water wastage. Suitable for the elderly, very young and arthritis sufferers due to the easily operated push button mechanism.
  • Pillar Taps: Individual cold and hot taps for two-hole baths and basins.
  • Pop-Up Waste: Generally supplied with monobloc mixer taps in place of a messy plug and chain style waste. A metallic operating rod is typically hidden behind the mixer tap and used to raise and lower the plug.
  • Pressure Reducing Valves: Frequently required on systems that use mixers and where a high pressure imbalance (greater than a ratio of 5:1 generally) is present.
  • Pullout Rinser: A feature whereby the tap's spout can be extended away from the body to allow the user a handheld rinsing option.
  • Shower Kit: Generally supplied with bath shower mixers, a shower kit contains an attachable shower hose and handset.
  • Side Action: A tap operated from a handle at the side of the lower body.
  • Single Flow: A tap feature that mixes both cold and hot water inside the mixer body. To comply with Water Bylaws fittings such as this require single check valves fitted to each inlet.
  • Single Lever: A mixer tap that uses a single handle to control both the water temperature and flow.
  • Swivel Spout: A tap that allows the spout to be swivelled in to the desired position of the user.
  • Wall Mounted: A tap that requires installation upon a vertical surface, often the wall directly above a bath or sink.
  • WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme): A product approval process whereby fittings are checked for mechanical reliability and material safety.
